BOSTON — Jed Lowrie tripled when right fielder Ichiro Suzuki lost his fly ball in the sun, and Carl Crawford singled him home with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Boston Red Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners today.

Jonathan Papelbon (1-0) earned the win with a perfect ninth inning.

Jamey Wright (0-1) took the loss despite getting his first four batters before Lowrie lofted one to right, where Suzuki looked helplessly as the ball hit him in the hip. After Marco Scutaro’s grounder was fielded by a drawn-in infield for the second out, Crawford lined one to center to end it.

The Red Sox won for just the second time in six games.

Seattle had won five straight.
