Kennedy gives Phoenix a season-opening win

Mike Kennedy scored the match’s only goal as the Portland Phoenix opened its PDL season with a 1-0 victory over the New Hampshire Phantom in Northeast Division play on Deering High School’s field in Portland on Saturday.

Ben Havey set up the goal, driving upfield before feeding a through ball to Kennedy. Kennedy took the pass and slid his shot past New Hampshire goalie Will Pike.

Portland goalie Matt Williams helped the goal stand up as the winning margin, completing a shutout with a pair of tough saves late in the game.

MLS: The Colorado Rapids extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches against the New England Revolution, taking a 0-0 draw.
