AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage today signed legislation that allows Lafayette Hotels to move forward on a $2 million construction project that will add 13 guest rooms and allow the installation of an elevator in the company’s hotel at Wells Beach.

The improvements to an already existing building do not disturb any undeveloped beach or sand dune, LePage said in a written statement.

In 2009, Lafayette Hotels was denied a permit because of a state statute regulating development on sand dunes.

Lafayette Hotels’ owner Danny Lafayette said the passage of the bill, LD 387, will help handicapped people and older guests at the resort by allowing the hotel to build an elevator. Many of them have been coming to the hotel for more than 50 years, he said.

If the town of Wells grants Lafayette the necessary building permits, construction will begin in the fall.
