The University of Maine at Farmington Undergraduate Research Council recently named the following students as Spring 2011 Michael D. Wilson Research Scholars: Emma Deans, Gorham; Jack Karn, Falmouth; Matthew Kuchinski, Gray; Sean Raph, South Portland; Carolyn Young, Cumberland Foreside.

Springfield College senior Lacey Cartier of York has received the Springfield College Who’s Who Among Students Award. Cartier is a fourth-year student majoring in therapeutic recreation services.

Southern Maine Community College student and Phi Theta Kappa member Rachel Champoux was recently named a member of the 21st annual All-USA Community College Academic Team for outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership by a two-year college student. Champoux received a $2,500 scholarship and was featured in a full-page section of USA Today. She also received a $5,000 PTK Guistwhite Scholarship and a $2,000 scholarship as the Coca-Cola New Century Scholar of Maine for being the top scorer in the state on her All-USA Academic Team application.

Bryn Mawr (Pa.) College: Gretchen Knoth, Portland, has been awarded a teaching assistant fellowship from the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright Program. She will teach English to secondary school children in Indonesia.

Kaplan University: Fernando Rinaldi, Saco, was invited to be a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

The following local students were inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing: Barbara Deveau, Gorham; Susan Serfass, Eliot; Kelly Mootos, Alfred; Kimberly Smith, Brunswick; Emily Schwarz, Cape Elizabeth; Mary Pride, North Yarmouth; Ashley Mead, York; Jillian McDonough, Saco; Danielle Harmon, Poland; Lindsay D’Ascanio, Kennebunk; Monique Bishop, Saco; Stefanie Beaulieu, Lyman; Kelsey Allen, Denmark.

The following local students were inducted into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology: Diane Shaw, Yarmouth; John Swasey, South Berwick; Meghan Garrard, Gorham.

Justin Gorham, South Portland, is one of four students nationally who were selected to win a scholarship prize from Pearson higher education publishers.

Rochester, N.Y., Institute of Technology: Mario Chanes, Portland, was invited to be a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

University of Southern Maine, Portland and Gorham: Haley Carter of Saco, was recently inducted into the International Sociology Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta.

University of Maine, School of Economics, Orono: Jonathan Rubin, also a member of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to work at the Center of Study in Renewable and Sustainable Energy at Sub-Saharan Africa’s University of Botswana.
