ELLSWORTH — Firefighters say 40 Bar Harbor Banking and Trust employees in Ellsworth have been allowed to go home after tests on a suspicious substance revealed there was no danger.

Firefighters say one worker who opened an envelope containing a powdery substance was sent to a hospital as a precaution today. Five others were quarantined and the remainder had to stay in the parking lot for about five hours until the testing was completed.

Incident spokesman Gary Fortier says preliminary tests were conducted by a Maine National Guard unit. Additional tests were being conducted this evening.

Hazardous response units from Ellsworth and Orono-Old Town joined the National Guard, FBI and Ellsworth Fire Department at the banking operations center.
