PORTLAND — About 1,500 people walked around Portland’s Back Cove trail this morning to raise funds to benefit heart research in Maine.

The Southern Maine Heart Walk had raised just over $223,000 as of today with that figure likely to increase over the next few days after all the donations have been tabulated, said American Heart Association spokeswoman Brenda Quinn.

Quinn said the weather – it rained or drizzled most of the time – may have cut down on the turnout.
The event, which began this morning at Payson Park, featured exhibits and inspiring testimony from Mainers, whose lives have been affected by heart disease.
