Amy Vachon, who guided McAuley girls’ basketball team to the Class A state championship last winter, will be joining the coaching staff of the University of Maine women’s basketball team and newly named coach Richard Barron.

Vachon was a standout player with UMaine. A two-time captain, she led the Black Bears to four straight NCAA tournament appearances and was a member of the squad that knocked off Stanford in the first round of the 1999 NCAA tournament. Vachon is the daughter of Paul Vachon, longtime coach at Cony High School. Amy Vachon played on two state championship teams and was honored as Miss Maine Basketball in 1996.

“I am thrilled to be returning to the University of Maine as an assistant basketball coach for the women’s basketball team,” said Vachon. “UMaine holds a very special place in my heart and the opportunity to return to the basketball program is a dream come true. I am very excited to start working with Coach Barron.”

“I am very excited to have Amy Vachon join our staff,” said Barron. “Amy has been a great success at everything she has taken on in her life. Her understanding of and networking with Maine girls basketball will be a tremendous asset and her experience on great teams and as Maine’s all-time assist leader will help us as we communicate to recruits the potential of this program.”
