PAINTING FOR A PURPOSE, a local philanthropy, recently awarded grants to five projects developed by students in Portland’s public schools. Grants of $500 each were awarded to West School, Lyseth School, Casco Bay High School, Portland Arts and Technology High School and Lincoln Middle School. The funds will help support projects such as growing lettuce for school lunches, installing occupancy sensors in bathrooms, starting a school garden, helping to build a house for Habitat for Humanity, and selling healthy snacks to raise money for a health care project in Haiti. THE YMCA needs volunteers for its second annual Tri for a Y and Crank and Shank dualathon on Saturday. All proceeds will go to the financial assistance program for the Cumberland County Y. THE DANCE STUDIO of Maine is offering summer dance classes and camps. Shake It Up! Dance Camp for children ages 5 to 12 is July 5-8. Hollywood! Dance Camp is July 11-14. Campers will learn a routine and present it to family and friends on the last day of the session. The studio is also offering seven weeks of summer dance classes, including teen and adult hip-hop, adult contemporary and dance star club for younger dancers.
