ORONO — Richard Barron, named women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine on May 10, today announced the hiring of a second assistant coach.

Jhasmin Player is a 2009 graduate of Baylor University, earning a degree in speech communication. She was  a four-year member and two-time captain of the Baylor basketball team and helped the Bears to four consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament, including a trip to the Sweet 16.

“I am very excited to have Jhasmin join our staff,” said Barron. “She had a successful career playing overseas and is ready to share what she has learned as a coach. Jhas has a wonderful personality and an infectious optimism that will be a great asset for our team.”

Player joins Amy Vachon as an assistant to Barron. Vachon, the former standout player at Cony High and UMaine, coached the McAuley girls’ team to a Class A state title last winter and was named an assistant at UMaine last week. Barron took over for Cindy Blodgett, who was fired after four seasons.
