MACHIAS — A substitute elementary school teacher in eastern Maine is free on bail after being charged with two counts of gross sexual assault of a student.
Forty-one-year-old Dianne Leach of Steuben entered no plea Monday at her first court appearance in Washington County Superior Court in Machias.
Leach was a substitute teacher at the Ella Lewis School in Steuben, which serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Maine State Police last month began investigating allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Leach and a male student. The superintendent said the investigation was launched when a teacher confiscated the alleged victim’s cell phone and saw a text message from Leach that raised concerns.
Leach is scheduled to make her next court appearance in July.
