TREMONT — The State Fire Marshal’s Office is reporting two dead after a fire swept through their home on Mount Desert Island.

Edmund Branch, 83, and his wife Eileen, 78, died after a fire destroyed their one story home around 3 p.m. Friday, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Edmund Branch’s body was found in the basement rubble Friday afternoon. Eileen Branch was flown to a Bangor hospital, where she died this morning from severe burns.

McCausland said investigators have returned to the home on Route 102 in the Seal Cove section of town to pinpoint the cause of fire. He said they are focusing their attention on commercial baking equipment in the basement.

Edmund Branch baked for a local restaurant.
