CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy’s historic schooner Bowdoin is gearing up for a busy summer sailing season.

Capt. Eric Jergensen, who’s the small vessel master at the Castine academy, says the Bowdoin will mostly sail along the coast of Maine for appearances at traditional sail and community festivals. The ship will also host a number of youth sailing excursions.

The Bowdoin will provide a welcome escort to the training ship, State of Maine, upon its arrival in Portland on June 25.

The official vessel of the State of Maine, the Bowdoin has had a long and illustrious career, sailing on 25 scientific expeditions to the Arctic Circle. Bowdoin sent the first shortwave communications from the region in 1923 while wintering in Refuge Harbor, Greenland.
