PORTLAND – Two familiar names are joining the growing field of candidates for mayor.
Nick Mavodones, the current mayor, and Jill Duson, a member of the City Council, are both getting in the race.
Mavodones, who has been mayor four times under the old system of the council picking one of its own members for the spot, plans to announce his candidacy this morning.
Duson posted a picture of the papers she filed to register as a candidate on her Facebook page and noted that she’s running. She did not indicate if she plans to make a formal announcement, and attempts to reach her this weekend were unsuccessful.
With the two newest candidates, there are now 12 in the field.
Since 1923, Portland’s mayor has been selected by the City Council from its nine members. Under a charter change approved last fall, Portland voters in November will elect a full-time mayor.
