LITCHFIELD — Maine Turnpike officials are reminding motorists that a bridge that crosses the turnpike in Litchfield is being demolished, forcing drivers to find an alternative route for six months.

The Academy Road Bridge is closing down Tuesday to allow the contractor to demolish it and build a new one.

Turnpike officials say the bridge is 56 years old and needs to be replaced. The new bridge is expected to open to traffic in mid-November.

Motorists who use the bridge will be detoured around the project onto Route 197 to cross the Maine Turnpike until the new bridge is completed.
