ST. ALBANS – Authorities combed remote woods Friday in search of a Dexter man who had led officers on several car chases in his hometown and in Somerset County.

Henry Murdoch IV, 45, fled into the woods of St. Albans after abandoning his pickup truck along a dirt road, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Murdoch was being sought for violating bail conditions and for instigating the police chases, McCausland said.

Dexter was seen shortly after 8 a.m. Friday on Main Street in St. Albans, according to police radio logs. Somerset County officers pursued his silver 1999 Chevrolet truck, but lost track of it.

The truck was seen again at 9:23 a.m. on Higgins Road in Pittsfield, according to radio logs. The chase shifted back to St. Albans, where Murdoch left his truck along Devil’s Head Road and fled into the woods.
