More than 100 Portland High School students cheered Friday as they welcomed back Zoe Romano, a 2005 graduate who recently completed a cross-country run to raise money for Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide.

Romano joined Mayor Nicholas Mavodones at Longfellow Square for a ceremonial run to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine on Cumberland Avenue. She was greeted there by students, club members and her parents, and presented with a proclamation declaring June 3 as Zoe Goes Running Day.

Romano began her run in early January in Huntington Beach, Calif., and ran to Charleston, S.C., covering more than 2,500 miles. She ran with a stroller filled with her gear and food, and stopped at Boys & Girls Clubs along the way to share her experience. She raised more than $13,000 for the national organization.

Romano began volunteering for the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Riverton Park Clubhouse in 2010. She said in December that she decided to raise money for the organization to help make a difference in the lives of kids who use the clubs.
