CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Sophomore Jeffrey Gibbs (8-5) allowed just one run and two hits in eight innings as Maine defeated Florida International University 4-1 in an elimination game this afternoon at the University of North Carolina’s Boshamer Stadium.

It was Maine’s first NCAA regional win in six years. The fourth-seeded Black Bears will play another elimination game at 1 p.m. Sunday against the loser of tonight’s contest between No. 1 UNC and No. 3 James Madison.

Tyler Patzalek reached base in all five plate appearances — he singled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice — and Michael Fransoso, Alex Calbick, Ian Leisenheimer and Colin Gay each had two hits as Maine bounced back after being shut out by UNC Friday night.

Leisenheimer put Maine ahead with an RBI single in the second inning. Joey Martin added to the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI double, and Maine got two more in the sixth on a single by Troy Black and a sacrifice fly by Taylor Lewis.

Gibbs allowed just a single to Pablo Bermudez in the first inning and a double to Yoandy Barroso in the ninth inning. Barroso scored on a single by Bermudez, but Stephen Perakslis recorded the final three outs to record the save.

Phil Haig (9-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings for FIU.
