SCARBOROUGH — A small plane with two occupants crashed nose-first in a field in Scarborough early this evening, sending two men to the hospital with serious injuries.

The single-engine experimental plane crashed soon after take-off, after achieving lift of about 100 feet, said Scarborough Fire Chief Michael Thurlow. One of the occupants called 911 to report the crash about 6:18 p.m.

Thurlow identified the men as Perry Fielding, 63, and Jeff Greanleaf, 40, both of Scarborough. They crashed on a private landing strip behind Bayley Campground off Ross Road. Both suffered what Thurlow described as serious but not life-threatening injuries. They were taken to Maine Medical Center.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
