YARMOUTH – Kelsey Bragdon pitched a seven-hitter as seventh-seeded Wells upset second-ranked Yarmouth 3-1 in nine innings Thursday in a Western Maine Class B softball quarterfinal.

The game was delayed 90 minutes because of thunder and a passing shower.

“(Bragdon) was outstanding. She kept them off balance and the defense made the outs behind her,” said Wells Coach Kevin Fox.

Bragdon, who struck out four and walked one, got defensive help in the fifth inning from right fielder Abby Moody, who threw out pinch-runner Lydia Ruetty trying to score from second on an overthrow after a dropped third strike.

Wells (12-5) had just two hits but made no errors.

“If our big bats aren’t producing, we know we have a solid defense that can win games,” said Fox.

Meaghan Lewia led off the Wells’ ninth with a single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice.

After Yarmouth issued intentional walks to the next two batters to load the bases, a groundout chased home the runners from third and second.

Bragdon got three ground-ball outs in the ninth to seal the win.

The Warriors scored a run in the third when Sophie Lamb walked, stole second and scored on a passed ball.

Yarmouth tied it in its half of the inning when Laura Klepinger singled, stole second and scored on a single by Alexa Sullivan.

Yarmouth’s Melissa Levinson was the only repeat hitter with two singles. McKenzie Gray struck out seven.

Hannan induced two groundouts and one batter reached on an error. She also was 4 for 4 with a triple and an RBI. Abby Rutt went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer.

TELSTAR 12, MT. ABRAM 0: Kayla Merrill threw five perfect innings for her fourth no-hitter and 11th shutout this season as top-seeded Telstar (16-1) advanced by beating ninth-seeded Mt. Abram (7-9) at Bethel.
