SCARBOROUGH – Paul Reny scored on an error in the top of the eighth inning as fifth-seeded South Portland earned a 2-1 win over fourth-ranked Scarborough in a Western Class A baseball quarterfinal Friday.

Andrew Richards struck out seven while pitching a six-hitter for South Portland (11-6), which next faces top-ranked Cheverus at 3 p.m. today.

Scarborough’s Ben Wessel also allowed six hits and had 10 strikeouts.

South Portland took the lead in the top of the second when Evan Indorf scored from third after the catcher attempted to pick off a runner on second base.

Scarborough (10-7) tied in the bottom of the sixth when Wessel hit a leadoff double and scored from third on a passed ball.

MARSHWOOD 7, DEERING 5: Luke Fernandes hit a two-run triple to spark a four-run first inning as the sixth-ranked Hawks (12-5) knocked off the third-seeded Rams (13-4) in a Western Class A quarterfinal at Portland.

Jack Verrill and Matt Brenner each drove in a run for Marshwood during the first-inning outburst.

The Hawks broke it open in the fifth inning. Robert Jones executed a suicide squeeze with the bases loaded to make it 5-1, and Alex McLain followed with a two-run single.

Deering rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs before Fernandes got the final out in relief of starter Ben Claus, who allowed just two hits through the first six innings.

Marshwood advances to face second-ranked Westbrook at 3 p.m. today.

YARMOUTH 5, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 0: Chris Lawlor pitched a four-hitter and Luke Pierce drove in two runs as the top-seeded Clippers (14-3) downed the eighth-ranked Patriots (10-7) at Yarmouth.

Lawlor (4-1) struck out six and walked one. He retired nine straight from the first inning into the fourth.

Pierce singled home Ryan Cody, who reached on a double, in the first inning, and hit a long solo homer to right-center in the sixth.

The Clippers scored three in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Campbell Haley and a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded.

Tim Lerette had two hits for the Patriots.

Yarmouth advances to face No. 4 Lincoln Academy at 3 p.m. today.

GREELY 9, MARANACOOK 3: Ben Shain struck out seven through five innings to power the second-ranked Rangers (14-3) past the seventh-seeded Black Bears (8-9) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Cumberland.

Matt Labbe knocked in two runs on three hits for Greely, which took control with a five-run second inning. Bailey Train belted two doubles, scored twice and knocked in a run, and Pete Stauber also had a pair of hits.

Dakota Duplissie had a solo home run for Maranacook.

Greely will host No. 6 Falmouth in a regional semifinal at 1 p.m. today.
