PORTLAND  — What’s billed as the largest one-day festival in northern New England is expected to draw 40,000 people to Portland today.

The 38th annual Old Port Festival will start at 11 a.m. and features six stages of regional music, activities, food and arts.

Portland Downtown District Executive Director Jan Beitzer calls the festival the official start of summer for  residents and visitors.

The festival kicks off with a parade beginning at the top of Exchange Street, with mascots, music, dancers, giant puppets and stilt walkers.
