PORTLAND — The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies has hired two alumni of the program as faculty members, less than a month after its entire four-person teaching staff resigned.

Andres Gonzalez and Christine Heinz both attended Salt as photography students in 2001, according to a news release. They both then attended Ohio University’s School of Visual Communications.

“As an educational institution, it’s our greatest hope that we graduate students would be able to come back to Salt and give back to the program in the most creative and impactful way possible, by teaching here,” said Donna Galluzzo, executive director of the Portland institute, in the release.

The four former teachers each submitted resignation letters individually, after Salt began considering curriculum changes for the fall semester to make its courses more focused on multimedia approaches. Their last day was at the end of May.

Bill Nemitz, a columnist for The Portland Press Herald, serves on Salt’s board of directors, as does Karen Beaudoin, a Press Herald features editor.
