BOOTHBAY HARBOR — Maine lobstermen are revving their engines as the state’s annual lobster boat race season kicks off.

Lobstermen launched the season on Saturday in Boothbay Harbor. They’re back at it again today with more races in Rockland.

Boat owners compete for cash, prizes and bragging rights in a series of 10 races that end on Aug. 22. The races are action-packed contests where the fastest of the souped-up boats reach speeds of more than 60 mph, leaving roostertails in their wakes as spectators watch from shore and boats that crowd the courses.

Other races are held this summer in Jonesport, Searsport, Stonington, Friendship, Harpswell, Winter Harbor and Pemaquid before finishing up in Portland Harbor.
