BANGOR – Kurt Johnson pitched a five-hitter and had an RBI single Saturday as St. Dominic earned its fourth Class C baseball state championship since 2005, edging Calais 5-4 at Mansfield Stadium.
Andrew Gosselin and William Desmarais also had RBI singles for St. Dom’s (18-2), which scored the tiebreaking run in the fifth without a hit. Joe Bryant reached second on a throwing error, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on another throwing error.
Johnson struck out five and walked four.
Calais (15-2-1) erased a 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth, aided by a two-run triple by Lewis Francis and an RBI single by Nathan Pike.
CLASS D BASEBALL
GREENVILLE 17, KATAHDIN 3: Matt DiAngelo went 3 for 3 with two doubles, and Christopher Munro drove in three runs to help Greenville defeat Katahdin in five innings for the Class D baseball championship at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.
Greenville (15-2) led 4-2 after three innings, then broke open the game with a nine-run fourth. Tristan Richards went 2 for 3 with a double for the Lakers.
Brandon Robinson and Kolby Gallagher each had a double for Katahdin (13-4).
Jeremy St. Louis allowed four hits and struck out five, helping the Lakers capture their first state championship since 1990.
CLASS D SOFTBALL
DEER ISLE-STONINGTON 7, RICHMOND 2: The Mariners (17-2) produced 16 hits and overcame a 2-0 deficit in the last three innings to avenge a loss to the Bobcats (17-1) in last year’s state final.
Sydney Ouzts struck out 11, allowed five hits and walked none to earn the win. She retired the last 11 batters.
CLASS C SOFTBALL
FINAL POSTPONED: The state championship game between Dexter and Telstar was postponed because of weather and field conditions at Brewer High’s Coffin Field.
The game was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Coffin Field.
