AUGUSTA — Maine has a new acting commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection.

Pattie Aho, who’s been serving as deputy commissioner of the agency since February, replaces Jim Brooks, who’s been hired as environmental manager of the Verso Paper Corp.’s Bucksport Mill. Brooks was longtime air bureau director for the state DEP.

Gov. Paul LePage’s original choice to head the Department of Environmental Protection, Darryl Brown, resigned amid questions about his role as head of a land management consulting firm.

As acting commissioner, Aho is expected to continue the LePage administration’s effort to improve permit processing time and provide more regulatory certainty and consistency.
