BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Will Middlebrooks reached base five straight times in defeat Monday.

He topped that effort Tuesday.

Middlebrooks produced hits in his last seven at-bats of the night, driving in six runs in the process, to lead the Portland Sea Dogs to a 6-3, 15-5 doubleheader sweep of the Binghamton Mets.

The Sea Dogs got help from their hottest hitter and hottest pitcher while assuring themselves of remaining out of the league’s cellar through the end of their trip to New York.

The Mets moved to within a half-game of the Sea Dogs with Monday’s 7-6 victory, but the sweep means Binghamton cannot pass Portland in this five-game series even it wins tonight and Thursday afternoon.

Middlebrooks helped rally the Sea Dogs in each game.

The first comeback gave Fife, who struck out a career-high nine, a share of the league lead in wins with 10.

The Sea Dogs won the second game despite the Mets using three consecutive home runs to take a 4-0 lead before a batter was retired in the bottom of the first.

Jon Hee finished 3 for 5 with a homer, double and five RBI. He started the comeback with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second then doubled in three runs to keep a seven-run sixth inning going.

Middlebrooks hit a two-run homer to left-center field to force a 5-5 tie in the top of the fifth. He singled up the middle to drive in one run and score another in the sixth.

Middlebrooks finished 5 for 5 with two runs and three RBI.

Chih-Hsien Chiang went 4 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBI. His two-run double broke the tie in the sixth and was followed by Middlebrooks’ sixth straight hit.

Jordany Valdespin hit a two-run homer off Michael Lee then Josh Satin and Allan Dykstra followed with solo shots for the Mets in the first inning.

Reynaldo Rodriguez lined a three-run homer to left field in the seventh inning to close the scoring.

Binghamton catcher Salomon Manriquez and Manager Wally Backman were ejected two pitches later for arguing balls and strikes.

Portland overcame a 2-0 deficit and being held hitless through four innings to win the first game.

Binghamton took a 2-0 lead on a two-out, two-run double by Matt den Dekker in the bottom of the second. Dekker, who finished with two doubles and a triple, was thrown out trying for a triple on the play.

The Sea Dogs did not get a hit off Collin McHugh in the first four innings, but still cut the lead in half with the help of two walks, a Rodriguez stolen base and a throwing error in the third inning.

Portland got to McHugh in the fifth when it scored four times.

Rodriguez was hit by a pitch leading off and Oscar Tejada and Hee followed with back-to-back singles. Mitch Dening put down a sacrifice bunt and McHugh tried to get the lead runner, only to throw the ball into left field, allowing the go-ahead run.

Two outs later, Middlebrooks singled to right field for two more runs.

Middlebrooks added the final Portland run with a seventh-inning single to drive in Alex Hassan, who had doubled.
