PORTLAND — New England Patriots Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett and the team’s cheerleaders are heading to Maine to kick off a push to create a special Patriots license plate.

Today’s event at the Maine Mall in South Portland will feature an unveiling of the proposed license plate. Two-thousand people will need to sign pre-orders to bring the proposal to the Maine legislature next year.

Similar license plates are already available in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Maine Patriots license plates would cost $35 on top of regular registration fees, with $25 going to the state for start-up costs of producing the plate and the remainder going to the Patriots Charitable Foundation. Foundation President Joshua Kraft says that foundation’s share would be earmarked for Maine nonprofits.
