FREEPORT — More than 100 farms across the state opened their barn doors today and welcomed members of the public in for the 22nd annual Open Farm Day organized by the Department of Agriculture.

By mid-morning at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, Executive Director Tod Yankee said more than 100 people had visited the barn to check out the sheep, goats, week-old chicks, turkeys and ducks. They also were able to tour part of the 626-acre property on a trailer ride driven by Director of Education Eric Tadlock and see cattle herds grazing, community gardens and a portion of the property’s coastline.

“It’s always important for people to be able to learn where their food comes from,” Tadlock said. “It gives them a greater sense of respect for their food.”
