NEW GLOUCESTER — Court documents indicate that a 7-year-old boy watched his father fatally shoot his mother and a man in New Gloucester before driving away and leaving behind the boy, as well as three siblings strapped into a car.

Joel Hayden, 29, was arrested and taken to the Cumberland County Jail after being released from a Portland hospital today.

Police say Hayden shot 27-year-old Renee Sandora of New Gloucester and his longtime friend, 28-year-old Trevor Mills of New Bedford, Mass., before leading police on a chase Monday night. Both Sandora and Mills died hours apart Tuesday at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

According to an affidavit, the boy described the shootings to police. All four children, including twin 3-month-olds, were with neighbors when police arrived.
