STANDISH — A 69-year-old man is dead after the vehicle he was driving went off a road in Standish and a hit a tree, trapping the victim inside, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was identified as John C. Townsend of Standish. It appears that Townsend suffered from a medical event that may have been a contributing factor in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials say the crash happened at about 4:42 p.m. Thursday on Chadbourne Road. The victim was the only person in the vehicle when it went off the road and down an embankment, before hitting the tree.

He was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing and may take several weeks.
