GOULDSBORO — The factory that held the nation’s last sardine cannery is expected to start a new life this week processing lobsters.

The company Live Lobster is expected to begin processing frozen lobster tails and frozen and fresh lobster meat at the Gouldsboro plant once owned by Stinson Seafood. The lobster meat will be sold to restaurants, stores and distributors around the country.

Live Lobster President Antonio Bussone tells the Bangor Daily News he expects to employ up to 50 people by the time operations begin.

Earlier this year, Live Lobster acquired the former Stinson Seafood sardine cannery in the local village of Prospect Harbor earlier this year from Bumble Bee Foods, which had closed it in April 2010, eliminating 130 jobs.
