The Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament will be held at Spring Point Marina in South Portland Thursday-Saturday. It begins with the captain’s meeting and fundraising auction on Wednesday. Both events are open to the public. Tournament fishing begins a midnight Thursday and concludes at 4 p.m. Saturday. The awards dinner is Saturday at 6 p.m.

 

Schoolgirl and schoolboy soccer officials are needed. The Western Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials is conducting its annual new soccer officials training clinics on Sunday and Wednesday evenings starting Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m. The clinics will be held at the Gorham Municipal Complex. The Showcase League, a wooden bat fall baseball league for high school level prospective college athletes, will be holding a tryout at Portland’s Hadlock Field at 10 a.m. on Aug. 7. The league has a nine-week season. The Southern Maine Flame, a fast-pitch softball organization, will hold tryouts for the 2012 season beginning on Aug. 4 in Biddeford. The Flame has teams in five age divisions that compete throughout New England. The dates, times and locations for each division: U10, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 5 and 11, Doran Field; U12, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Aug 4 and 12, Doran Field; U14, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Aug 10 and 17, Mayfield; U16, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 and 18, Mayfield; U18, 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 14, Mayfield.
