The Hobbs Pond swim will be held Sunday at the Hope town beach on Pond Road. Swimmers, spotters, helpers and spectators should start gathering at 9:30 a.m., with the starting whistle scheduled for 10 a.m., rain or shine. The swim is informal and swimmers of all ages are welcome. Volunteer spotters and timers are needed. Registration deadline for the Portland High sailing team is 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12. Practice begins Aug. 29 and tryouts are Sept. 6. Sailing is a coed sport open to Portland and Casco Bay High students. For more information, call Portland High at 874- 8250.

The McDonald’s Heroes-Hope-Healing Golf Classic will be held Monday, Aug. 15, at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono. Proceeds benefit the new Children’s Cancer & Treatment Center at Eastern Maine Medical Center. The tournament begins at 12:15 p.m., with a reception and silent auction at 5 p.m. followed by a lobster and steak banquet at 6.
