MONTPELIER, Vt. — The parent company of Vermont’s Cabot Creamery Cooperative says it will change its labels, website and communications with consumers to ensure no one is misled about which products come from cows that are free of the artificial growth hormone rBST.

Agri-Mark’s announcement follows word of a settlement between the Vermont attorney general and the Methuen, Mass., company.

State officials say Cabot made overstated claims in saying that several of its products came from cows that were rBST-free.

The state says that Agri-Mark Inc. has agreed to pay the state $65,000 and to donate $75,000 worth of dairy products to food banks. The co-op also must accurately inform the public about “the rBST status of its products.”

The two sides agreed the changes could be phased in during the next six months.
