BANGOR — A woman is facing charges she smuggled the synthetic drug bath salts into a Bangor jail.

Police say 26-year-old Kari Hersey carried the recently outlawed lab-made drug inside her body when she was processed into the Penobscot County Jail at about 8 a.m. Saturday on charges she’d failed to pay for a hotel room where she’d been staying.

Bangor Police Sgt. Paul Edwards says an alert correctional officer spotted Hersey consuming the bath salts. She was hospitalized.

Edwards tells the Bangor Daily News Hersey was charged with felony trafficking in prison contraband.

If convicted of the prison smuggling charge, Hersey could get five years in prison.
