Daniel Walsh had two hits and turned in two stellar defensive plays this morning as Andover (Mass.) National withstood a late comeback to deal Yarmouth what is likely a lethal blow with a 5-3 win in the New England Little League Regionals at Breen Field.

Yarmouth, now 1-3 and finished with the round-robin portion of the tournament, needs a lot of help if it is to advance to the single-elimination playoff. Four of the six New England teams qualify and Barre (Vt.) Community Little League is winless.

Andover (2-1) added a pair in the fourth when a leadoff walk, an error on the first baseman and a single by winning pitcher Mike Reilly (1-1) made it 5-0. Yarmouth countered in a fifth inning that saw two sparkling plays by Walsh prevent a potentially game-changing inning.

After Walsh ranged into the hole for the first out, Conor O’Donnell singled and John Thoma walked. With two outs, Chris Romano (2 for 3) rapped an RBI single. Thomas scored on a wild pitch and Romano came around on a single by Grant Tobias.

Luke Klenda sent a scorching line drive into the hole that Walsh picked off to preserve the lead.
