AUGUSTA — Former Maine House Speaker Dan Gwadosky, a Democrat, passed away this morning. He was 57.

Gwadosky, who died Wednesday, served 18 years in the House of Representatives, the last four from 1993-1996 as speaker. He was secretary of state of Maine from 1997 to 2005 and later headed the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations. He lived with his wife Cheryl and their two children in Augusta.

He had been sick with cancer for about a year.

Former Gov. John Baldacci said Gwadosky was “committed to innovation and to making government work for the people of Maine.”

“Dan was also a terrific family man and active in his community as a coach and volunteer,” Baldacci said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan’s family and many friends during these hard days.”
