AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is sounding a warning about the growing prevalence of the hallucinogenic drug known as “bath salts.”

In his weekly radio address today, LePage says bath salts are “wreaking havoc” on Maine.

Law enforcement and hospital officials have seen a surge this year in the number of people acting delusional and violent after taking the synthetic drug, which has street names including Monkey Dust, Vanilla Sky and Purple Rain.

State legislators this year outlawed bath salts in Maine as of July 1.

LePage says he hopes lawmakers will strengthen the law even more when they convene next month.
