SCARBOROUGH — Police closed the southbound lanes of a section of Route 1 in Scarborough this afternoon after a 52-year-old man fell from an I-295 access road and was struck by a car.

Scarborough Police Sgt. Eugene O’Neill said police were investigating whether the man jumped from the Scarborough Connector bridge intentionally or if he fell by accident.

O’Neill said the man, whose name was not released, was rushed to Maine Medical Center in serious condition. Police are in the process of notifying the man’s family about the accident.

The driver of the car that struck the man was a male who was questioned by police after the incident and released. No other information about the driver was available.

O’Neill said police received a number of calls from people who saw someone on the overpass prior to the incident.

Police have reopened Route 1.
