AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage says many Mainers are worried about how they’ll make it through winter. As prices have risen, the federal government has proposed slashing funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
In his weekly radio address, LePage says he’s asked the state’s congressional delegation and New England Governors for their support is keeping LIHEAP adequately funded.
He also asking Maine’s congressional delegation to include a review of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as part of Congress’s deliberations on the LIHEAP cuts. He says tapping the reserve might bring the price of heating oil back to Earth.
LePage says that last season, 63,000 Mainers needed financial help to put oil in their tanks to keep warm. Now, the resources of non-profits and private donors are stretched thin.
