BATH — A Brunswick man, who stole a truck before leading police on a chase through Bath Sunday night, has been arrested.
Police Chief Michael Field said officers apprehended 23-year-old Matthew S. Gaspar, “for driving wildly in a stolen truck.”
A Sagadahoc County deputy first spotted Gaspar traveling at a high rate of speed across the Sagadahoc Bridge from Woolwich to Bath shortly after 9 p.m.
Several Bath police officers attempted to locate Gaspar’s truck, but lost him for a few minutes. He was next seen leaving the parking lot of the Bath Shopping Center at a high rate of speed.
Gaspar abandoned the truck on Central Avenue. Police used a dog to track him. He was taken into custody at a Central Avenue apartment.
Gaspar was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving to endanger, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license before being transported to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
He is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Oct. 4.
