BANGOR — An office worker accused of overbilling medical procedures and then pocketing the money has been sentenced to 37 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $355,000 in restitution.

Judge John Woodcock imposed the penalties today on 38-year-old Dawn Zehrung, also known as Dawn Grover, who was responsible for billing at Bangor Women’s Health Care.

Prosecutors say an independent audit revealed a pattern of billing for more extensive examinations than those that were actually performed, in the process overbilling insurance companies by more than $300,000. Zehrung was also accused of stealing patients’ co-payments and giving herself unauthorized bonuses.

Zehrung, of Dover-Foxcroft, pleaded guilty in March to health care fraud. This case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
