HAMPDEN — Officials say a Belfast man fleeing Maine police died when the car he was driving crashed into a tree in Hampden.

Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Cynewski was killed when he crashed his Jeep on U.S. Route 1A.

The Bangor Daily News says the chase that led to the crash began shortly before 3:30 p.m., when Bangor Police received a report that a vehicle traveling south on Interstate 95 was operating erratically. The vehicle was spotted on I-395, but took off when an officer tried to stop it.

Cynewski’s vehicle sideswiped another car just before it hit the tree. The driver of the other car was not hurt.

The incident remains under investigation.
