PORTLAND — Eleven Maine-based firms are among the 5,000 fastest-growing companies in America, according to Inc. magazine’s annually ranking of private companies based on revenue growth.

The list – called the 2011 Inc. 500|5000 – includes three Portland firms with three-year revenue growth of more than 250 percent: pet pharmaceutical firm Putney, Spanish-language call-center operator Listen Up Espanol and IT and telecom consulting company Tilson Technology Management.

At number 1040, Putney ranked highest among Maine firms. Revenue at the firm, which makes drugs for pets, increased from $2.4 million in 2007 to $9.5 million in 2010, a 291 percent gain.

Revenue at Listen Up Espanol, which scored number 1098 on the list, grew 274 percent in three years, from $2.9 million in 2007 to $10.7 million in 2010. In addition to operating a call center in Mexico, five-year-old Listen Up Espanol sells Spanish-language marketing services.

Tilson Technology, number 1144 on Inc.’s list, earned revenue of $3.4 million in 2010, up 260 percent since 2007.

Tilson, which was founded in 1996 and has 55 employees, manages IT and telecommunications projects, consults on information security, develops software and manages wireless site acquisition and construction projects.

Other Maine companies on the list are Portland-based Preval Group, Woolwich-based New England Medical Transcription, Look’s Gourmet Food in Whiting, Scarborough-based Nationwide Payment Solutions, South Portland-based Pioneer Telephone, Internet and phone service provider GWI in Biddeford, Mailings Unlimited in Portland and Gardiner’s Isamax Snacks.

To qualify for Inc. magazine’s 500|5000, companies must be privately held, based in the United States and have earned at least $100,000 in 2007 and $2 million in 2010.

The fastest-growing private firm in the country, according to Inc., is New York City-based ideeli, which operates a members-only retail website. Ideeli’s revenue grew 40,882 percent in three years, from $189,510 in 2007 to $77.7 million in 2010.
