The University of Maine men’s hockey team is heading to Fenway Park.

Hockey East and the Boston Red Sox announced this afternoon that the Black Bears will be one of four teams to play in “Frozen Fenway,” a Hockey East doubleheader on Jan. 7, 2012, that will pit Vermont against Massachusetts at 4 p.m. and Maine against New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first time Maine will play in a countable outdoor game.

Maine Coach Tim Whitehead and Maine captains Will O’Neill and Brian Flynn attended a press conference this afternoon at Fenway Park in Boston to announce the event, the second time in three years that Fenway will host outdoor hockey. The stadium hosted the NHL’s Winter Classic and a Hockey East mens-women’s doubleheader in January of 2010.

Maine will play three games against New Hampshire, its traditional rival, this season: Nov. 5 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H., Jan. 7, 2012, at Fenway Park and March 3 at Alfond Arena in Orono.

Tickets for Frozen Fenway will go on sale at noon Sept. 13.
