PORTLAND — All of Maine and New Hampshire and southern Vermont are under a tropical storm warning as Hurricane Irene continues to move up the East Coast.
The National Weather Service says the storm will be weakening after it makes landfall, tracking to New Hampshire by this evening and then along the Quebec-Maine border tonight.
Forecasters are expecting 2 to 5 inches of rain across Maine and 4 to 8 inches in New Hampshire, with winds gusting to 55 to 60 mph and seas building to about 20 feet. A high wind warning has been issued for northern Vermont.
Meteorologist John Cannon says he expects some flooding, downed trees and power outages where the rains are heaviest.
