The Maine Turnpike Authority is reporting stop and go traffic in the southbound lanes as summer tourists leave Maine.

The turnpike reported that beginning at 10:30 a.m., heavy traffic volume was slowing the exodus at the southern terminus of the highway, especially at the York toll plaza, from mile marker eight to the New Hampshire line.

Conditions worsened as late as 2:30, traffic tie ups were reported as far north as mile marker 26 in Kennebunk.

By 4:25 p.m., traffic was still tied up but only as far north as Wells, a turnpike dispatcher said.
