MIAMI — Hurricane Katia grew to a Category 3 storm Monday as it moved across the Atlantic Ocean.

On Monday afternoon, Katia’s maximum sustained winds had increased to 116 mph, making it a major hurricane, and some additional strengthening was expected later in the day.

Hurricane specialist Todd Kimberlain said it was looking less likely that Katia would hit land but that wind from the storm could still affect the U.S. East Coast as it moved north.

Kimberlain also said the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions should still keep an eye on Katia.

Katia was centered 495 miles south of Bermuda and was moving northwest near 12 mph.
