WORCESTER, Mass. – Courtney Harnais scored a second-half goal to lift the University of Maine to a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross in a college field hockey game Tuesday.

The goal came at 55:55 when Harnais headed a long cross from Kaitlyn MacIsaac into the right corner of the net.

Meagan Price-Leibenzeder made four saves for the Black Bears (2-1-1) against the Crusaders (0-1) to earn her second shutout of the season.

FIELD HOCKEY

UNE 3, FRAMINGHAM STATE 2: Bree Tupper scored two minutes into overtime as the Nor’easters (4-0) defeated the Rams (1-1) at Framingham, Mass., for their second OT win of the season.

Laura Egounis and Hayley LaPointe also scored for the Nor’easters. Kaitlyn Ranieri and Katie Devoe scored for Framingham State.

Kaitlyn Warren had two saves for UNE and Sarah Ryan stopped 15 shots for the Rams.

FOOTBALL

AP TOP 25: No. 1 Oklahoma held on to the top spot in the first regular-season rankings, while LSU used its 40-27 victory against Oregon to jump rival Alabama, which slipped to No. 3.

The Sooners received 32 of 60 first-place votes and 1,448 points. LSU received 17 first-place votes and 1,415 points.

Alabama had nine first-place votes and two voters had No. 4 Boise State ranked No. 1 after the Broncos’ impressive 35-21 win against Georgia. Florida State moved up to No. 5.

Oregon dropped nine spots to No. 13 and defending national champion Auburn, which started the season at No. 23, fell out of the Top 25 after needing a late rally to beat Utah State 42-38 at home.

NOTRE DAME: Coach Brian Kelly announced that Tommy Rees will replace Dayne Crist as starting quarterback for Saturday’s game at Michigan.

Crist was benched after halftime of Notre Dame’s 23-20 loss to South Florida in its opener.

Just two weeks ago, Crist was announced as the starter after beating out Rees in training camp. Kelly said at the time he expected the senior to keep the job for the rest of the season.

 

HAWAII: Two starters suspended for the season opener after being arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault will play Saturday at Washington.

Warriors Coach Greg McMackin said outside linebacker Aaron Brown and receiver Darius Bright are back on the team.

 

WISCONSIN: The school dismissed defensive lineman Jake Irwin from the team after he was arrested in connection with an incident outside a campus gym last week.

Campus police said Irwin was arrested for two counts of disorderly conduct and two counts of battery for his role in an altercation that took place in the early morning hours of Sept. 1. Police say Irwin was struck in the head with a rock and needed treatment for his injuries.

 

MISSOURI: Tailback Kendial Lawrence has a broken bone in his leg and is likely to be out a month.

USC: The school reinstated tailback Marc Tyler from suspension, clearing him to play Saturday against Utah.

Tyler missed the Trojans’ season-opening win over Minnesota and much of training camp for a series of disciplinary problems.
