BRUNSWICK – Ellery Gould scored two goals to lead Bowdoin (1-0) to a 3-0 victory in its season-opener against the University of Southern Maine (0-3-0) at Pickard Field in women’s soccer on Thursday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 26-0-1 all time against the Huskies.

Kaley Nelson knocked home a rebound off the post at 26:01 for her first collegiate goal and a Bowdoin lead. Gould scored her first before intermission, off a feed from Alexa Yurick. Gould headed in a cross from Casey Blossom at 56:57 for the final goal.

Bowdoin’s Louise Johnson made three saves. Kat Rothe had 12 for USM. 

ST. JOSEPH’S 2, THOMAS 1: Emily Cocciardi scored off an assist from Danielle Daigle in the 65th minute to give the Monks (1-1) the edge over the Terriers (0-3) at Waterville.

USM 1, GORDON 0: Ariel Kaplan scored in the sixth minute on Stephanie Lomasney’s rebound as the Huskies (1-3) edged the Fighting Scots (1-3) at Gorham.

BASEBALL

SMCC 2, BRIDGTON ACADEMY 1: Michael Calabrese drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Seawolves a win in their opener at South Portland.

(9) OKLAHOMA ST. 37, ARIZONA 14: Brandon Weeden connected with Justin Blackmon on two short touchdown tosses, Joseph Randle ran for two scores and the Cowboys used an early burst of offense to win in Stillwater, Okla.
